You see this brand character on every Planters peanut item, and you've come to love him as a sophisticated, fun, social icon that entertains for all occasions. Yes, it's "Mr. Peanut," America's most beloved advertising icon. But how was this brand character developed and what is it about him that gives him his enduring connection with us as consumers. In its simplest form, it's animated marketing.

No Ordinary Nut

The "Mr. Peanut" brand character was originally created in 1916 by a 14-year-old Virginia boy. Simply by entering a Planters-sponsored trademark contest, he developed a drawing of a peanut with arms and legs, labeled "Mr. Peanut." Later, Planters enhanced the drawing to include a top hat, a monocle, and a cane. The rest can be chalked up to animated marketing history.
